As of 2021, Beth had participated in 6 Boston Marathons while Joel’s first was participating on the team for 2020’s virtual Boston. Through their efforts, Team Connolly has raised over $100,000 for cancer research through the Claudia Barr Program at Dana-Farber. They have been part of the Partner and In-Memory programs honoring some of the Jimmy Fund’s most inspiring heroes. Your support fuels their training mileage and gives them heart when their legs get tired.

Donation: $300

Event: We hosted Beth and Joel in the Tasting Room on September 23rd for the Beer Release, Fundraiser, and Outsmart Cancer Trivia. 100% of the ticket sales were also donated to the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge.

Raise a Glass & Cash – Weideman Family Fund

Featured Benefactor: On September 11, 2020, a dear friend of Great North experienced an unimaginable setback. After suffering a life-altering stroke at just 43-years old, Dave Weideman was stripped of basic motor skills and the joys of everyday life.

For Dave, that included craft beer most of all. To read about Dave’s journey and his inspiring road to recovery, click here.

Featured Beer: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Tank

Donation: $2,208 (this included ticket sales for the Beach Party)

We brewed “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Tank” as a tribute to one of our favorite customers! An American lager – an ode to great, summer classics and friends. To kick everything off, we hosted a Beach Party, Beer Release and Fundraiser on July 23rd, 2021. 100% of proceeds for ticket sales, plus a portion of Bigger Tank beer sales over the following few months were donated to the Weideman Family Fund.

Raise a Glass & Cash – Manchester Historic Association

Featured Organization: The mission of the Manchester Historic Association is to collect, preserve and share the history of Manchester, New Hampshire.  The Association operates the Millyard Museum and the Research Center, both of which are open to the general public.

Featured Beer: True Brew Lager

Donation: $412.51

We brewed True Brew to be a light, crisp, German-style lager. This limited draft release was available in the Tasting Room during April & May 2021. There is a story behind the name True Brew…

When we sat down with John Clayton, the Executive Director of the Manchester Historic Association, to discuss collaborating on a beer for our charitable community partnership, he immediately had an idea of what to name the beer; a name that has historic significance in Manchester.

Many people are familiar with Frank Jones & his namesake brewery in Portsmouth, but not many are aware that Frank had a brother, True Jones, who opened True W. Jones Brewing Co. in Manchester. It was in operation from 1891 to 1917. True Jones brewed beers such as Granite State Ale, Climax Ale, and Jones’ Lager Beer.

Little, in fact, is known about True Jones. He appears to have followed Frank (and several other siblings) to Portsmouth, from whence he made his way to the state’s largest city, Manchester. There he, in 1891, gained control of the Carney, Lynch & Company brewery. Changing the name to the True W. Jones Brewing Company, he became king of the Manchester brewing scene. But, then again, that was pretty easy: by the 1890s True W. Jones was the only game in town. He was the only brewer in Manchester. True passed away on October 2, 1899, but the brewery that bore his name continued on until New Hampshire went dry in 1917.

Thank you community for your support!

A year ago this past Sunday was the last time we hosted a ‘full house’ in our Tasting Room for our 2020 St. Paddy’s Day Celebration. The Pop Farmers rocked the house, Rob dressed up as a Leprechaun (he still wonders how he agreed to do that), and people were just starting to be a little cautious.

Just two days later we, along with other breweries, restaurants, and businesses were in shutdown. We all found ways to operate in our new reality. We started curb-side pick-up, take-out, and delivery. You supported us with gusto.

The reality of shutdown presented challenges to the restaurant and hospitality industry, as well as non-profit organizations. We are big believers in supporting those around us and wanted to do whatever we could to help. We’d like to share the results of two of those efforts, as they would not have been a success without community support.

Before March 2020, we had hosted Red Cross blood drives twice a year. As the shutdown continued, the need for donations were critical, and drive locations were scarce. We began hosting as often as we could. Since March 2020, we have hosted 13 drives, which collected 349 units, and impacted the lives of 1,047 hospital patients. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated.

In April we organized a collaboration beer called Gratuity, donating 100% of proceeds to the New Hampshire Hospitality Employee Relief Fund. With the support of our entire team at Great North, and our friends at Woodstock, Moat, Smuttynose, Great Rhythm, Amoskeag Beverages, Amherst Label, Wyeast Labs, D Coco Studios, and all who purchased the beer, we were able to make a donation of over $10,000 to the fund.

In November, we were honored to receive the Stars of the Industry Live Free and Give Award from the New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association. Everyone mentioned above shares a part in that award.

We know we are in the home stretch, but the needs of these organizations continue. We currently have monthly blood drives scheduled through June if you would like to sign up. And donations can still be made to the NHLRA Employee Relief Fund.

Gratuity for the Granite State

New Hampshire breweries Great North Aleworks, Woodstock Inn Brewery, Moat Mountain Brewing Company, Smuttynose Brewing Company and Great Rhythm Brewing Company have collaborated on a new beer in order to support the New Hampshire Hospitality Employee Relief Fund (NHHERF).

100% of the proceeds from this beer will be donated to the NHHERF so they can continue supporting employees of the hospitality industry who have been impacted by COVID-19.

The collaboration is a Pale Ale named Gratuity featuring Galaxy, Amarillo and Lemon Drop hops.

Due to current COVID-19 guidance, an in-person collaboration was off the table. Great North brewed the beer and all five brewers have donated the needed supplies and ingredients. Gratuity will be ready to ship to exclusive distributor Amoskeag Beverages the first week of May 2020 and be available state wide in New Hampshire. The opportunity to say thank you to the hospitality industry who have helped us all build our business is something we cherish.

Cheers to creative thinking, community support and teamwork!

A special thank you as well to Amherst Label, Wyeast Labs and D Coco Studios for their generosity and support in the making of Gratuity.

About the New Hampshire Hospitality Employee Relief Fund

The New Hampshire Hospitality Employee Relief Fund (NHHERF) was built by the New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association (NHLRA) and the New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association Education Foundation to support employees of the hospitality industry who have been impacted by COVID-19.
